Zhejiang Province has crossed a major threshold in its clean energy drive, with total installed solar capacity reaching 50.71 gigawatts by the end of March, according to State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Co., Ltd. That’s up 14.74 GW from the same period last year—a 41% jump—bringing solar’s share to nearly one-third of the province’s total power generation capacity.
With the rapid buildout, solar output is also hitting new highs. On April 15, Zhejiang’s solar power generation peaked at 34.36 GW, covering 39.2% of the province’s maximum electricity demand that day—a record level.
The expansion is underpinned by sustained investment in energy infrastructure and strong policy support at the local level. Municipal governments have introduced a range of initiatives to streamline project approvals and promote renewables, creating favorable conditions for development across varied landscapes—from roadside slopes and industrial rooftops to coastal flats. Cities such as Hangzhou, Wenzhou, and Zhoushan have made full use of available space to scale up photovoltaic deployment. Power companies, meanwhile, are fast-tracking grid connections to get more green electricity into homes and businesses.
Zhejiang is also reinforcing its transmission backbone to better accommodate renewable energy. The province is building a robust grid anchored by ultra-high-voltage (UHV) AC ring lines, backed by four UHV DC channels serving as major inbound arteries. This setup is expected to improve the integration and efficiency of renewable power across a wider area, helping to make clean energy use more reliable and cost-effective.
