Shanxi Province reported record-high coalbed methane (CBM) production in the first quarter of 2025, highlighting the region’s growing role in China’s domestic energy supply. CBM output reached 3.53 billion cubic meters between January and March, a 14.5% increase year-on-year, according to figures released by the Shanxi Provincial Bureau of Statistics. It was the highest production ever recorded for the same period.
CBM—commonly referred to as mine gas—is a form of unconventional natural gas extracted from coal seams, with methane as its primary component. It has become an increasingly important part of China’s strategy to reduce reliance on imported gas and stabilize supply.
At Huabei Oilfield’s Qinshui operations in Shanxi, daily output has consistently exceeded 7.2 million cubic meters since the start of the year. On April 19, as usual, inspection trucks rolled out from the base at dawn, part of a routine that keeps the sprawling gas field running at full capacity. A spokesperson for the Shanxi branch of Huabei Oilfield said annual production from Qinshui is expected to hit a new record in 2025, reinforcing China’s push for energy self-sufficiency.
