China has made another significant breakthrough in shale gas exploration. The Fuling Shale Gas Field, located in the Sichuan Basin, has added 121.356 billion cubic meters of proven reserves in the Nanchuan Block, bringing its total proven reserves to over one trillion cubic meters. This milestone further strengthens the nation’s energy security.
The Fuling Shale Gas Field is China’s first large-scale shale gas field to achieve commercial production. The newly confirmed reserves are located in Chongqing’s Nanchuan District, where technical teams used variable-density 3D seismic acquisition technology to precisely map the geological structures. Gas reservoirs have been identified at depths ranging from 1,000 to 4,900 meters. These reservoirs are categorized as normal-pressure shale gas reservoirs with low pressure coefficients, making extraction particularly challenging.
Since its commercial launch in March 2014, the Fuling Shale Gas Field has produced over 70 billion cubic meters of shale gas, accounting for roughly one-third of China’s annual shale gas output. This clean energy has been supplied to six provinces and two municipalities along the Yangtze River Economic Belt, benefiting over 200 million residents and thousands of businesses. The field plays a crucial role in advancing high-quality development across the region.
