There are three different types of insects screens on the market. Fixed and Magnetic. Here are their characteristics:
Fixed insect screens refer to is an insect screen that is held taught by a fixed frame. Your typical window screen, hinged or sliding door are all examples of fixed insect screens.
Incredibly versatile, these insect screens can be specified with a huge range of options to suit your needs.
They are the most common flyscreens we sell and it’s easy to see why. They’re cheap, versatile and functional and there is a wide variety of options, accessories and colours that you can choose from.
For awning windows that do not use a chain-winder mechanism, and for virtually all casement windows, we recommend using magnetic insect screens.
Magnetic fly screens are a favourite for use in ‘Queenslander’ style homes and other styles that use push out awning and casement windows. Push out windows are those where the windows push out from the inside so screening externally is not practical while screening internally requires access through or around the screen to get to the window handles and catches.
A Magnetic screens border frame is flexible. It allows you to lift the screen to gain access around the screens for opening or closing your windows effortlessly.
Due to this flexible design, magnetic screens require a more robust insect mesh and we specify patio & pool fly mesh in all our magnetic insect screens.
Note: Paw proof and other stiff mesh materials like aluminium or stainless insect mesh are unsuitable for Magnetic insect screens.
If your home is in a bushfire zone, your house needs to be BAL rating compliant (You can check the Guide to Windows and Doors in Bushfire Prone Areas here). There are aluminium or stainless insect screens available for this purpose. This way you and your family are as safe as possible. Note: Always follow directions from the Authorities during bushfires and have a bushfire plan in place.
If you are looking for a cheap solution for your house, fixed fly screens are the cheapest ones you can install in your house.
Magnetic screens are slightly more expensive than fixed screens, but they’re still a budget-friendly option for homes that use push out awning and casement windows.

Fly screens aren’t classified as a security product. So if you are looking for some level of security besides being free from insects, you need to get security screens.
Read more about security screen ratings here to understand the different security screen grades on the market.
Keep in mind that insect screens are designed to provide ventilation while keeping insects out.
They will NOT prevent a child’s fall from a window. (Check here which Type and Grade of Screens are safely able to prevent children from falling out of any window).
Note: If you only have insect screens on your upper-level windows do not remove any window opening restrictors your builder may have installed without installing a Safety grade window screen in its place or your home will be in breach of the building code.

Fly screens play an essential role in creating a comfortable living environment by keeping insects out while allowing fresh air to circulate. Choosing the right fly screen for your home depends on several factors, including your space, needs and preferences. With various styles available, from retractable designs to fixed and sliding options, each type offers unique benefits tailored to different areas of your home.
Retractable fly screens are an excellent choice for homeowners seeking versatility. When not in use, they roll away neatly, preserving an unobstructed view. These screens are particularly useful for large openings such as patios, bi-fold doors, and expansive windows. Made from durable, non-corrosive materials, retractable screens offer a sleek and modern solution with minimal maintenance required. While installation can be straightforward, professional fitting ensures a seamless and secure result.
For areas where a permanent barrier is preferred, fixed fly screens provide reliable protection. They are ideal for windows that do not require frequent access, offering consistent insect defense with little upkeep. Fixed screens come in various frame materials, such as aluminium and fibreglass, and can be tailored to match your home’s aesthetics. Their sturdy design makes them a practical long-term solution, particularly in high-insect areas.
Designed to complement sliding doors and wide windows, sliding fly screens operate smoothly along a track. They are commonly used in entertainment areas, where large openings require consistent insect protection without compromising accessibility. A well maintained sliding screen, including regular track cleaning and lubrication, ensures durability and ease of use over time.
The mesh size of your fly screen determines both its effectiveness and visibility. A finer mesh keeps out smaller insects but may slightly reduce airflow, making it ideal for areas with midges and other tiny pests. A more open mesh allows for better ventilation while still keeping larger insects at bay. Here are some popular mesh options we offer:
This heavy duty mesh is designed for homes with pets. It is scratch resistant and stronger than standard fly screen mesh, making it ideal for doors and windows that experience frequent contact with pets.
If you live in an area prone to tiny insects such as sandflies and midges, this finer mesh offers superior protection by preventing even the smallest bugs from entering your home. It maintains airflow while ensuring a bug-free environment.
UltraVue mesh provides enhanced visibility, making it an excellent choice for homeowners who want to enjoy clear outdoor views while maintaining insect protection. This high-transparency mesh is ideal for windows and doors where aesthetics are a priority.
This innovative mesh not only keeps insects out but also enhances privacy by allowing you to see outside while limiting visibility from the outside looking in. It’s a great option for street facing windows or areas requiring additional privacy.
Fly screens should complement your home’s design rather than detract from it, and most modern screens come in customisable colours and frame styles to seamlessly blend with your decor. Additional features, such as UV protection or privacy tints, can further enhance the functionality of your fly screen.
