Magnets Used for Lifting Manhole Covers

Round Manhole Covers

Ever wondered what it takes to lift a manhole cover? Well, if you’re not a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, and you don’t want a serious injury, then it takes a certain amount of leverage or magnets. In this blog, we’re going to cover two different methods used to lift manhole covers, what kinds of magnets are used to make the second, and a low-budget option to retrieve lost tools that slip down, down, down into the sewer.

Cover-lifting

Methods

Two common methods for lifting manhole covers include the T-lift and the magnetic lifter. The T-lift is shaped like a slanted letter T. It relies on body weight to lift heavy covers, allowing the user to avoid any sort of bending or lifting with their hands and legs. It’s designed with curved hooks on either end that unseat the cover in one motion. It’s a popular choice for construction workers as also it allows them to clean inside the ring for better sealing.

Magnetic lifters are great for reducing back injuries, and they will last indefinitely if taken care of. They're also typically lightweight and easy to maneuver. Made with aluminum and rare earth magnets, it’s simple to use. To remove the cover, place the magnet on one end and then engage the handle to break open the seal. Finally, lift and pull towards yourself. Magnetic lifters typically use three or four different block magnets with pull forces somewhere between 150 and 250 lbs.

Retrieving Lost Tools

Accidents happen, and if a few spare tools end up falling into the manhole, the last thing you want to do (if you even can) is crawl down there and search for them. Fortunately, there’s a low-cost option to retrieve lost tools — retrieving magnets! Our double-sided neodymium retrieval magnet holds up to 200 lb and comes with two removable eye bolts through which you can thread something like a nylon rope. Covered in zinc-plated steel, these retrievers are water-resistant, though not waterproof. Be sure to dry off moisture post-use.
